Wobble Head

Wobble Heads, also commonly called a Swing Jig Heads, are bottom contact lures known for their erratic side to side lure action enabled by a single hook with a soft plastic that freely swings from the jig head when coming into contact with hard bottom and cover.

Anatomy: Wobble Head lures are soft bait lures with a heavy jig head and a single hook attached to a wire loop or a split ring (which allows the hook to be replaced).  This leaves the hook and soft plastic to move freely. Some suggest adding split rings between the jig head and the hook to provide further free movement.

  • Swing Jig Head: Common name.
  • Football Head: [Figure 1 although not obvious as it is a side view] Common.
  • Pointed Head: [Figure 2] Less common and best with grass
  • With Hook [Figure 1, 2]
  • Without Hook: [Figure 3]
  • Skirted: [Figure 4] Less common is skirted football jig with swing head (wobble head). Also categorized as a football jig.
  • Rugby Head: [Figure 7] Less common, where a rugby head is a cross between a football head and ball head.

Variants & Other Names

  • Swing Head: Hook swings.
  • Swing Baits.
  • Wobble Jig.
  • Biffle Head: Some call wobble heads Tommy Biffle’s after the pro angler that made it famous.
  • Hard Head: One manufacturer’s name for a wobble head.
  • Articulated Jig: Referring to the jointed action of the lure.
  • Tokyo Rig: [Figure 7] Technically not a variant as there is no jig head, it is an alternative, as it has a hook and soft plastic freely moving but 2 to 3 inches off the bottom. Some suggest this is better when there are muscles as it will keep the line off the bottom and less likely to be cut by the muscles.

Specific Wobble Head Selection

Selecting the Wobble Head Lure Type, as a soft bait lure type,  there are the following key decisions:

  • Size: Generally considered a large profile lure so some consider larger profile soft plastic when fishing very slow. If fishing faster the larger profile soft plastics will make the lure more buoyant resulting in it being harder to keep the wobble head on the bottom.
    • Small: 2″ to 3″
    • Common: 4″ to 5″
    • Large: 6″ plus for example a worm soft plastic.

How to Rig

As soft bait lure type, the common rigging considerations includes:

  • Jig Head:
    • Hook Size:
      • Small: Less than 3/O
      • Common: 3/0, 4/0, 5/0
      • Large:  6/O and larger.
    • Weight:
      • Light: 3/8 oz
      • Common: 1/2 oz, 5/8oz, 3/4 oz
      • Heavy: 1 oz
  • Soft Bait Setup: Texas rigged to make weedless although the hook tip doesn’t need to be placed back into the soft plastic as it is not going through grass. Some suggest this will increase hook up ratio.

  • Main Line: Some suggest fluorocarbon, especially if the line will come into contact with rock; some suggest for braid.
    • Light: 12 lb test to 15 lb test
    • Common: 15 lb test to 20 lb test
    • Heavy: 20 lb test plus
  • Leader: If braid is the main line it is common to add a fluorocarbon leader.
  • Rod:
    • Baitcaster Rod: Common with Power = Medium Heavy and Action(Taper) = Fast
      • Reel: Some consider fast reel 6.5:1 or more to make it easier to catch up to fish that bite and swim towards the boat. Some suggest a slow reel to help ensure a slow retrieve.
    • Spinning Rod: Not common.
