Targeting Cover

Targeting Cover is making a lure hit cover such that it makes a noise, deflection, change in speed and change in lure action typically introducing an erratic potentially triggering a reaction bite

Why is Targeting Cover Important?

Targeting cover with a lure is important as it:

  • Bass HabitatInactive bass typically located near cover, when available.
  • Trigger a Reaction Bite: If the bass is already following the lure or right on the targeted cover, the contact of cover will cause the bass to attack the lure which is called a reaction bite. In other words, the bass reacts to the lure contacting the cover.
  • Gets Bass’ Attention: The noise, the erratic cover, will get the bass’ attention and entice them to investigate. This is when repetitive presentations to the same spot are important.

Targeting Cover Options

At the highest level, targeting cover:

  • Grass:  Grass, also called vegetation or weeds, is shallow cover for bass that can be categorized as submerged, grass line, clumps, floating/matted and emergent.
  • Rock: Rock, as cover, is any rock large enough to provide bass shelter, shade or an ambush point, also referred to as boulders. Boulders are rocks over 10 inches thus a size that provides cover. Rock, as cover, can be categorized as an isolated boulder, scattered boulders, rock piles, and rip/rap (man made structures of rock and broken cement)
  • Wood: Wood, as cover, is any wood large enough to provide bass shelter, shade or an ambush point. Wood as cover, can be categorized as brush piles, laydowns, Stumps/Standing Timber, and Logs.
  • Dock: Dock, floating or fixed, and other manmade cover includes bridges, cribs, channel markers and wrecks provide cover for bass.
  • Off CoverBass are off cover either because they are on the move or no cover exists. When off cover they are typically suspended
Additional Considerations
  • Targeting Structures: Bass locate will near structures that provide shelter, shade or an ambush point especially when there is limited cover.
  • Active Bass: Active bass are off cover as they are actively feeding or moving for environmental, seasonal or other reasons.
  • Specific Considerations: Specific considerations for targeting cover can be found in grass, rock, wood and docks.
