Tube Lure

Tube Lures are bottom contact lures known for its spiral drop lure action when rigged with a jig head and a more erratic lure action when rigged with a single EWG hook (extra wide gap). Tube lures all are rigged with a tube soft plastic which is often rigged open hooked [Figure 1] with a tube jig head but can also be rigged weedless (stupid rig (with a jig head) or texas-rigged hook)) The weedless version with a jig head is often referred to as a stupid rig. A tube rigged with a EWG Hook is typically referred to as a weightless Texas Rig Lure.

Anatomy: Tube Lures are soft bait lures which feature a tube soft plastic, a tube jig head. When rigged with a hook it is typically a EWG hook or a tube hook[Figure 8] texas-rigged weedless and thus becoming a weightless Texas Rig Lure.

Variants & Other Names

  • Stupid Rig: [Figure 5] Texas-rigged weedless tube on a tube jig head [not a hook]. Some suggest a tube jig head with a 60 degree line tie is better than the 90 degree line tie to better retrieve through grass.
  • Texas-Rigged – EWG Hook: A tube soft plastic texas-rigged with a EWG hook (some suggest 3/O) or a tube hook[Figure 6] which results in a light lure with a slow descent where some cut the plastic by the hook for a better hook set.  This is also a weightless  Texas Rig Lure.
    • Free Rig: If you add a free floating weight in front of the tube it becomes a free rig lure. Free Rig lures are found in Carolina Rig to which some would consider a variant of a carolina rig.
  • Weight & Hook Rigged: Not common, but some suggest putting a bell-style weight in the tube soft plastic then using rigging a EWG hook through the eye of the hook that is in the tube soft plastic and then texas-rigging the hook. [See video
  • Snapping a Tube: Also called cracking a tube when using a heavier jig head.

When to Fish Tube Lure

Tube Lures are bottom contact lures typically selected when:

  • Targeted Depth is:
    • Shallow: Common, especially with light jig head or with a EWG hook and thus no weight.
    • Deep(Offshore): Common when rigged with a heavier tube jig head
  • Fishing Speed is:
    • Slow: Commonly considered a slow fishing lure.
    • Fast: Not commonly considered for fishing fast.
  • Lure Visibility is:
    • High Lure Visibility:  Common, as it looks natural enough to mimic a moving bait fish and other forage
    • Low Lure Visibility: Less common,
  • Targeting Cover: [NL] Some suggest all lures are good near cover where tube lures are used when contacting:
    • Grass: Common in scattered grass or grass lines.
      • Weedless: Less common to rig the tube lure weedless which is referred to as a stupid rig when using a tube jig head.
    • Rock: Common.
    • Wood: Common.
    • Dock: Common as generally considered a skipping lure.
    • Off Cover: Less common.
  • Soft Bottom vs Hard Bottom: Common to be dragged on hard bottom and hopped on soft bottom.

Specific Tube Lure Selection

Selecting the Tube Lure Type, as a soft bait lure type,  there are the following key decisions:

Rigging Decisions

As soft bait lure type, the common rigging considerations includes:

  • Hook: Tubes can be rigged with a jig head or hook:
    • Hook Type:
      • EWG: Extra wide gap including tube hooks [Figure 8]
    • Hook Size
      • Small: 1/O, 2/O
      • Common: 3/O
      • Large: 4/0
  • Jig Head:
    • Tube Jig: Various styles of tube jig heads including a football tube jig head for rock or when mimicking a goby.
    • Hook Size: B
      • Small: 2/O
      • Common: 3/O
      • Large: 4/O, 5/O
    • Weight:
      • Light: 1/16 oz, 3/16 oz, 1/8 oz
      • Common: 1/4, 3/8 oz to 1/2 oz
      • Heavy: 3/4 oz, 1 oz, 1 1/4 oz.  Some suggest using a heavy tube which provides more noise on the bottom, longer casts, faster fall rate getting a reaction bite, and can fish faster.
  • Weights: Not common, but some suggest putting a bell-style weight in the tube soft plastic then using rigging a EWG hook through the eye of the hook that is in the tube soft plastic and then texas-rigging the hook. [See video

Tube Lure Presentations

Presentations for Tube Lure are commonly considered a vertical presentation as some focus on the spiraling action during the lure descent or horizontal presentation as some focus on dragging the lure. As such, it is a slack line presentation with the focus is on hopping (snapping, cracking) or a tight line presentation when dragging with the following considerations:
