Toad Lure

Toad Lures, sometimes called a soft plastic frog or a frog soft bait, or a buzz frog are surface contact lures primarily known for the use of use of a toad soft plastic which provides a weedless frog looking soft plastic with kicking leg motion that provides vibration and a wake similar to Buzzbait. Some refer to toad lures as a heavy cover buzzbait with a more subtle lure action good with no wind/waves.

Anatomy: Toad lures are soft bait lures which feature a soft plastic, a single hook, sometimes a double hook, typically a weighted hook, with a screw lock and typically texas-rigged. The weighted hook helps keep the lure from spinning and for making longer casts.

Variants & Other Names

  • Floating Toad: Some manufacturer’s toads float which enables a pause without the lure sinking when desired.
  • Pre-cut Belly: Some manufacture’s toads are pre-cut which helps enables hook placement and deeper hook sets
  • Swimbait Coneheads: A cone-based pegging system used for soft swimbaits that can also be used for toads to help get the lure through the grass and protect the soft bait from disconnecting from the hook.

Search Bait: Common to be considered a search bait due to the fast fishing speed.

Pros’ Choice: Not common.

When to Fish Toad Lure

Toad Lures are surface contact lures typically selected when:

  • Targeted Depth is:
    • Shallow: Common
    • Deep(Offshore): Not common.
  • Fishing Speed is:
    • FastCommonly considered a fast fishing lure. The actual speed is defined by the toad soft plastic as the right speed maximizes the lure action. If looking for a similar but slower presentation, some suggest using the frog lure as a toad sinks when paused.
    • Slow: Not common, as the lure will sink on a pause. The one exception would be when targeting the lure to sink in the gaps in floating/matted grass.
  • Lure Visibility is:
    • High Lure Visibility: Common
    • Low Lure Visibility: Less common.
      • Engaging Lateral Line: Top water vibration, which is referred to as sound, varies from subtle to load based on the size of the legs.
      • Engaging Hearing: The leg action does provide a top water thump-like sound. Sound is a primary attribute as compared to a frog lure and due to the sound the toad is often compared to a buzzbait with some calling the toad a weedless buzzbait.
      • Engaging Sense of Smell and or Taste: Some soft plastics do provide odor and taste but not generally a major consideration due to the faster fishing speed.
  • Targeting Cover: Some suggest all lures are good near cover where toad lures are used when contacting:
Specific Toad Lure Selection

Selecting the Toad Lure Type, as a soft bait lure type,  there are the following key decisions:

  • Soft Plastics
    • Common:
      • Toad: Sometimes referred to as a soft plastic frog.
  • Size:
    • Small: 2.5″
    • Common: 3″
    • Large: Not common.
  • Lure Color: As lure color selection is mostly tied to the lure visibility download the Acute Lure Color Breakdown™ Infographic.
Rigging Decisions

As soft bait lure type, the common rigging considerations includes:

  • Hook:
    • Options and Attributes:
      • Screw Locks: Screw lock keepers are required to attach the toad soft plastic and some add a swimbait cone peg to help protect the plastic.
      • Wide Gab Single Hook: Texas-rigged and some suggest a screw keeper to hold the toad soft plastic.
        • Extra Wide Gab Single Hook: Some suggest the wider hook will get caught in more grass dislodging the soft bait from the hook keeper.
      • Straight Shank Hook: Not common but some nose hooked to the toad soft plastic.
      • Double Hook: Less common, there is a double hook for toads.
      • Hook Out: Some suggest the hook out, either top and in some case bottom, when fishing away from cover.
    • Hook Size:
      • Small: 3/O
      • Common: 4/O, 5/O
      • Large: 6/O
      • Weighted Hooks: Common to have weight hooks with:
        • Light:
        • Common: 1/8 oz
        • Heavy
  • Main Line: Common for braid
    • Light: 20 lb test to 45 lb test
    • Common: 45 lb test to 65 lb test
    • Heavy: Over 65 lb
  • Leader: Not common
  • Rod:
