Presentations for Bass Fishing

A presentation is a high level term referring to all things related to “presenting” a lure to a potential bass including the cast , the initial lure action, retrieve technique, secondary action, repetitive casts at the same spot, hook set and landing the bass.  It also includes the decision of using a follow-up bait on a missed blow up, a short strike, a follower or even an identified wolfpack. Presentations also enable the chosen finding bass strategy.

Presentation Options

Presentations can be broken down into four categories:

Horizontal presentations are when lures transverse through the strike zone parallel to the water surface. Sometimes referred to as a “moving bait”.

Vertical presentations are when lures descend through the strike zone perpendicular to the surface often referred to as jigging.

Slack Line, sometimes referred to as semi-slack line, is slack in the line is introduced during the retrieve. Slack line can be introduced for long durations of time or for very short amounts of time to produce a desired lure action.  One common reference to slack line refers to a long period of time to produce the initial action on the lure and/or to allow the lure to descend vertically. Another slack line presentation is where slack line is introduced for a short period of time for example in the jerk retrieve and walk retrieve to produce the desired lure action. Another presentation where slack line is introduced when the slack needs to be reeled in to help with the process of moving the lure for example the drag retrieve or as part of the hop retrieve. The opposite of a slack line presentation is a tight line presentation where the line to the lure is always taut as it is always under tension.

Tight line presentations, albeit not a common term, are when the line to the lure is always taut, in other words always under tension with no introduced slack. Essentially the opposite of slack line presentation. A more common phrase to describe tight line presentation is horizontal presentations although they have different meanings. A tight line presentation differs from a tight lining, a phrase typically associated with the jig head minnow
