Hair Jig

Hair Jigs are bottom contact lures known for their natural, subtle puff and flare lure action. Hair jigs’ lure action are generally considered unique as it results from the natural hair or feathers materials generally used to make a hair jig. Hair jigs are also known for their small profile, no weedguard and their ability to be fished shallow and deep.

Anatomy: Hair Jig lures are skirted lures which feature small jig heads and skirts typically made from natural materials such as hair, feather, hair & feather and in some cases synthetic fiber & feather. The jig head line tie is generally at or near 90 degrees to the lure to help it run horizontal and look more natural. The bulkier hair jigs have the slower the fall rate. Jig heads include:

  • Ball Head: [Figure 1] Also called a round head, common for light weight hair jigs.
  • Mushroom Shaped Head: [Figure 2] Less common, mushroom head is similar to a 1/2 ball head.
  • Darter Head: [Figure 3] Common for straight retrieve when not coming into contact with bottom. It is designed to give more of a bait fish look typically comes with eyes. It also falls slightly faster on a tight line pendulum initial action.
  • Football Jig Head: [Figure 4] Not common, some suggest dragging over rocks to make noise.
  • Weedguard: [Figure 4] Not common.
  • Underspin Blades: [Figure 6] Not common.
  • Soft Plastic Trailer: [Figure 7] Not common to have manufacturer pre-rigged soft plastic trailer.

Variants & Other Names

  • Bucktail Jig: [Figure 1] Made of deer hair which has buoyancy and the hair assists in the slower fall rate providing for a more natural action.
  • Marabou Jig: [Figure 2] Made from marabou feathers (Marabou Stork)
  • Flashabou Jig: [Figure 4,6] Flashabou is a tinsel-line, thin, reflective and flashy synthetic material.
  • Preacher Jig: [Figure 5,6]Has a streamlined compact bullet-shaped head to allow it to get through dense cover. It can include a weedguard

Specific Hair Jig Decisions

Selecting the Hair Jig Lure Type, as a skirted lure, there are the following key decisions:

  • Jig Head:
    • Hook Size:
      • Small: 1/O
      • Common: 2/O, 3/O
      • Large: 4/O
    • Lure WeightAs fall rate is impacted by the jig head:
      • Light: 1/16 oz, 1/8 oz
      • Common: 3/16 oz, 1/4oz,  3/8 oz, 1/2 oz
      • Heavy: 5/8oz, 3/4oz, 1 oz
  • Soft Plastic Trailer
    • Soft Plastics: Less common than other skirted body lures, for trailers:
      • WormSome add 1″ to 2″ section of worm to provide some additional weight and keeps the skirt off the hook. It also can add scent and taste.

Rigging Decisions
As skirted lure body type, common rigging considerations includes:
  •  Main Line: Some suggest braid for longer casts and some suggest fluorocarbon.
    • Light: 8 lb test to 10 lb test
    • Common: 10 lb test to 12 lb test
    • Heavy: 15 lb test to 20 lb test
  • Leader: Common for a lighter fluorocarbon as it is common to fish in high lure visibility scenarios.
  • Rod
    • Spinning Rod: Common with Power = Light (some suggest Medium Light) and Action(Taper) = Fast
      • Reel: Some consider 8.0:1 high speed reel to pick up the slack quickly.
  • Baitcaster Rod: Less common.
