Weedless can describe an attribute of a lure (e.g. weedless soft swimbait) or a technique to rig a lure (e.g. soft swimbait rigged weedless). Weedless also means the lure is resistant to snagging on all cover especially grass and wood.
Why Weedless Lures Important?
Weedless lures are important to:
Minimize Snags: Whether going through grass, or bouncing off wood, docks or rocks.
Weedless Options
Texas-Rigged: Texas-rigged, or texas rigging, not to be confused with the texas rig lure (which is texas-rigged), is a technique of rigging a soft plastic with a single hook that results in the hook point being located in the soft plastic resulting in a weedless setup.
Tex-Posed: Tucking the tip of the hook back into the soft plastic.
Single Hooked Horizontal Presentation Lures: Generally speaking single hook are less likely to get snagged on grass. For example, some consider the spinnerbait lure as weedless as the V wire and blades will help displace the grass from getting caught on the single long shanked hook.
Weedguard: These are typically small, flexible wires or bristles attached to the hook of the lure. They help deflect weeds away from the hook, reducing the chances of snagging.
Molded/Rigged Swimbaits: Some molded/rigged swimbaits have the hook embedded in the dorsal fin or the body of the soft bait.
Additional Considerations
Treble Hook Lures: Generally treble hook lures are not suggested for grass cover except lipless crankbait with a design that somewhat protects the hooks from getting snagged combined with a “ripped” retrieve that is a jerk retrieve motion that removes any grass on the lure.
