Search Baits, or search lures, are common terms used to describe a lure that are used to fish fast to find bass typically using a cover water strategy.
Why are Search Baits Important?
Search Baits are important to:
Find Bass: Typically, to fish fast supporting a finding bass strategy, not necessarily to catch bass. In other words when sight fishing or using electronics, using search baits to find bass and if the search bait lure doesn’t catch the bass using follow-up lure or returning later in the day/tournament to catch that bass.
Use Forward Facing Sonar: Some watch a lure on forward facing sonar to identify bass that are pulled off cover thus becoming viewable with forward facing sonar.
Search Bait Options
Fishing Cover: When bass are tight to cover it can be difficult to locate bass as such search bait can pull bass from cover making the observable from forward facing sonar
Fishing Structure: Using search baits are common when targeting structures to find bass.
Additional Considerations
Triggers to Change Lures: Blow ups, short strikes and simply not being able to land a bass.
