MLF Officials

Major League Fishing (MLF) prioritize fan engagement and bass welfare. During Bass Pro Tour tournaments, caught bass are weighed and released according to strict rules, overseen by an onboard MLF Official. These officials are responsibilities include:

  1. Enforcing Rules and Assessing Penalties:
MLF Officials issue penalties ranging from 2 to 15 minutes for rule violations. During these penalty periods, anglers must cease all activities, including non-fishing actions like putting on clothing (the time putting on a coat would be time not fishing when done outside of the penalty). The most frequent penalty, a 2-minute penalty which occurs when a bass accidentally falls onto the boat deck during landing.
  2. Weighting and Recording Catches:
Officials weigh each bass using a certified scale and record the weight both manually and within Scoretracker, an MLF application on an iPad. They also document critical catch details, such as lure type, depth, and cover, for live fan viewing. (These details are exclusive to fan broadcasts.)
  3. Providing Angler Updates:
Using Scoretracker (a version distinct from the fan-facing application), officials provide anglers with real-time performance updates. These updates include competitor names, rankings, total catch weights, and individual fish weights with catch times. While fans receive more detailed information, professional anglers can often infer competitor strategies based on their knowledge of individual fishing preferences and confidences.
