Minimal Contact Lures for Bass Fishing

Minimal Contact Lures have minimum contact with cover typically used when targeting bass near cover, over cover and suspended bass.

Lure contact categories, albeit not a common categorization, helps understand the lure’s common location in the water column along with what the lure’s design enables it to contact. The four categories used are: surface contact lures, minimal contact lures, cover contact lures and bottom contact lures.

Why are Minimal Contact Lures Important?

Minimal Contact Lures are important to:

  • Minimal Contact with Cover or Bottom: Sub-surface lures that are not designed to contact cover or bottom typically having multiple treble hooks.
Minimal Contact Lure Options
Minimal Contact - Soft Bait Lures

Wacky Rig lures could be categories as any contact category but best fit minimal contact lures as the lure action stops when the lure comes into contact with cover. Wacky rigs are known for their natural looking subtle, slow fall rate, undulating lure action with a soft plastic worm that attracts the bass during the fall generally before contacting cover or bottom. Wacky Rig is also known for fishing slow, used in high pressured water and for skip casting scenarios.

Jighead Minnow Lures, sometimes called damiki rig, hover strolling, mid-strolling minimal contact lures known for a very subtle natural looking minnow-style and balanced jig head and soft jerkbait plastic combinations that rest horizontally. Jighead minnows are also known for slow fishing deep and for targeted suspended bass. Some suggest an effective lure when using forward facing sonar [figure 5].

Alabama Rigs are minimal contact lures  known to look like a small school of bait fish with pulsating and flash lure action typically produced by its multiple soft swimbait and blades. It is also known for being restricted by some local fishing regulations and restricted or banned from some bass fishing tournaments.

Minimal Contact - Treble Hook Lures

Hard Jerkbait Lures are minimal contact lures known as an all season lure with erratic lure action when the jerk retrieve is used which mimics an injured or spooked bait fish.

Lipless Crankbaits are minimal contact lures known for their wobble vibration lure action. Lipless Crankbaits are also known for their rattle noise, flash when chrome/silver color, and a treble hook lures that can be presented in lighter submerged grass cover scenarios which is sometimes referred to as “ripping a crankbait”.

Glide Baits are minimal contact lures known for their S-Shaped sweeping side to side natural looking lure action and also known as a larger profile lure. Some suggest glide baits are best suited to target larger bass.

Hard Swimbaits are minimal contact lures known for their natural swim-like lure action as they are hard baits with multiple sections that come in a wide variety of sizes, weights and sink classifications. Some refer to hard swimbaits as a smaller version of a glide bait albeit with less pronounced lure action
