Cover Water, sometimes called “Winding”, or “Chuck and Wind, “Running Water”, “Putting Trolling Motor on High”, “Covering Water” is one of the strategies to find bass and/or help identify apattern.
Why is Covering Water Important?
Covering Water is important to:
Find Fish Fast: A time efficient strategy typically involving fishing fast in multiple areas with the goal of finding bass and ideally identifying a successful pattern.
Cover Water Options
Covering water tactics commonly include:
Quickly Testing Different Areas: Some suggest staying in one area on the lake no more than 15 to 30 minutes unless bass are found. Common to fish fast when testing each area but it is possible, albeit less common, to fish slow and still test multiple areas.
Fishing Fast: Some suggest fishing fast to find bass acknowledging that some fish may be missed but active bass will be found.
Trolling Motor on High: Some suggest putting the trolling motor on high which means a larger distance between casts, a form of fan casting, to find fish.
Additional Considerations
Time in Area: Common not to stay in any area for short periods of time with some suggesting 15 minutes depending on the size of the area – unless fish are found.
When to Slow it Down: Typically, covering water includes fishing fast, and when covering water is not working, it is common for the strategy to change to “slowing it down” meaning fishing slow.
