Skirts for Bass Lures

Skirts provide a lure a pulsing lure action created during the retrieve. Skirts on a jig heads are the foundation for skirted lure type. Skirt material are also used for legs on skirted legged frog lures.

Why are Skirts Important?

Skirts are important to:

  • Mimic Swimming Forage: Skirts produce a pulsing lure action that mimics forage swimming.
  • Camouflage the Hook: Skirts hide the hook on skirted lures.
  • Increase Lure Profile: Skirts increase the size/profile of lures which can be important in low lure visibility scenarios.
Skirt Options
  • Skirted Lures: Skirts are the foundation of skirted lures.
  • Punch Skirts: Speciality skirts for heavy jigs heads used when punch casting which are typically larger, thicker and more durable as compared to standard skirts.
  • Adding Skirt:
    • Texas Rig Lures: Not common, but a skirt can be added to a texas rig lure.
  • Material: Skirts are made of silicon, rubber and in the case of a hair jig – hair.
  • Strand Count: The number of strands defines the skirt’s bulkiness. More strands are bulky and displace more water. Too many strands can reduce the lure action.
  • Skirt Length: Longer skirts can have more lure action and bulk albeit it is common to cut back the skirt to even with the hook and use soft plastic trailers to enhance lure action.
  • Replaceable Skirts: [Figure 1] Some manufacturers produce skirted lures to which the skirt can easily be changed either due to maintenance issues or to change color.

Additional Considerations
  • Skirt Trimming: Create a smaller profile possibly because the forage is smaller, increase fall rate and increase the flare.
