Follow Up Baits, also called a follow-up lures, are lures on a rod on the boat deck ready for a presentation to a specific spot where there was a missed blow up, or a short strike, or a follower, or a missed lure hook set. The goal, or theory is, you have found an active bass, thus presenting an easy meal will entice a bite.
Why are Follow-Up Baits Important?
Follow-up baits are important to:
Catch Missed Fish: Have a high probability lure ready to be cast to a specific spot once a bass has been identified. Similar to sight fishing except the identification of bass was done with a lure not by sight.
Follow-up Bait Options
Repetition: Some believe the follow up bait should be used after one or more repetitions of the lure that caused the short strike or missed blow up.
Slow Lure Fall Rate: Keep the lure in the strike zone longer with a lure that has a slow rate of fall for example a soft jerkbait or a wacky rig.
Duration: Keep the lure in the same spot for a long time, dead-sticking, for example using a drop shot.
Additional Considerations
Timing: Some suggest having a follow-up bait ready and cast very quickly is key as the bass will move away.
