Toad Soft Plastic for Bass Lures

Toad soft plastics are commonly known for toad lures featuring sinking solid plastic opposed to a typical frog lure that has a hollow body that floats. It also provides a unique lure action and can be used with a single or double hook.

Why are Toad Soft Plastics Important?

Toad soft plastics are important to:

  • Mimic Forage: Mimics a frog, some would consider a single hook version of a frog lure, or a solid version of a frog lure, that sinks.
  • Increase Profile: Toad soft plastics provide additional profile (and lure action) to some skirted lures as a soft plastic trailer.
  • Wake Retrieve: Albeit not generally described as creating a wake, the toad soft plastics may look like a frog but they can be used to create a wake action.
Understanding Toad Soft Plastic
  • Common Sizes: 2.5 to 4 inches.
  • Distinguishing Features: A flat frog profile.
  • Sound: Sound produced by the legs is the biggest difference between types of toad soft plastics with the larger the feet the bigger the sound.  Also the larger soft plastics require faster retrieve to make that sound. [small feet = less sound = slower speed]
    • Paddle Legs: Common for toads to have two paddle tail style legs that create the action on a steady straight retrieve. Paddle legs provide the most lure action and thus some suggest when there is a chop on the water or waves.
      • Fish Faster: Larger less require more speed to create the action(larger sound).
    • Flat Plastic Legs: Flat plastic legs have less action then a standard paddle tail. Some suggest using it when the water is very calm as they believe it provides more natural motion than the paddle tail legs.
      • Fish Slower: Smaller thinner legs require less speed to create the action (lower sound).
    • Real-Looking Legs: Less common for toads to have real-looking legs where a walk retrieve would be required.
    • Single Tail: Toad soft plastics that have a single larger leg that creates flapping motion that looks like the spin of a buzzbait.
      • Subsurface: Some add a small weight (weighted hook) to get the single tail toad just below the surface which can maximize the lure action.
  • Enabling Lure Action: Slight walking motion, not as much as a walking frog lure.
